Mynah Birds

This exotic species of birds native to eastern Asia is a sight to see. The black bird to the left is known as a Hill Mynah and is among the best birds with the ability to imitate sounds when in captivity. Our Hill Mynah is a four year old female who has a cute little call and loves to jump around her cage. Mynahs, being soft bills, require a special diet of fruits and soaked pellets. Soft bill pellets are relatively easy to find and almost any kind of fruit they will eat.
They can get messy at times so it is best not to keep them directly next to your wall or you may be scrubbing crusty fruit for a while.
We also have a breeding pair of Bali Mynahs who are beautiful. They are very rare due to the fact that they are only found on the island of Bali in Indonesia. They are critically endangered and we are very lucky to have a pair. We would love to see this pair go to a serious collector and have them try to breed to help continue the existence of this magnificent species. Please stop by if nothing else but to look at all the species of birds we have. Your support is what helps us keep going.

Ducorps Cockatoo

The Ducorps cockatoo is one of more rare varieties of cockatoos endemic to the Solomon Islands.
They are very intelligent and thought to be more independent than most their relatives. But like any cockatoo they are still going to need a lot of time and affection to function at their best.
The average life span of this bird is 35 to 45 years so buying a bird like this you will have a companion to go through a majority of life with.
We are lucky enough to have one of these beautiful birds in our store and his name is 'Dewie.' He is seven months old and a ball of energy. He shares a cage with a rose breasted cockatoo named 'Princess Peach' and they love each other. Anywhere she goes he follows. They are both so sweet. At first  he leaves her side begrudgingly but once separated he has no problem being away.
He loves to play games, especially climbing around on top of his cage like we are playing a game of chase. He is very vain, always cleaning himself and thoroughly enjoys being told how great he looks.
Dewie would be a great addition to any family and be a perfect pet for someone of any age. Come play with him and decide for yourself!

Yellow-naped Amazons

The purpose of this blog is to highlight birds we have and to share thoughts and opinions on all things birds and plants. For our first topic I would like to highlight Yellow-naped amazons.

We have two Yellow-naped Amazons at the store. The one pictured is named Sinbad. Sinbad is a fourteen year old male who loves to sing and mimic different animal noises. His favorite song to sing is 'I left my heart in San Francisco' and his favorite animals are a dog and a crow. He adores girls and has a hard time trusting males, he always asks 'Wheres the girls!?' but if you take the time to get to know him he will love you regardless.

Amazons are very complex birds each with their own distinct personality. You will have plenty of time to figure them out though because these Amazons can live up to seventy years in captivity. Their ability to mimic makes them a great pet. They add life and energy to any home. They will constantly fascinate you with the antics and phrases they develop over time. Very exotic looking these birds will wow your family and friends.

They are relatively easy to care for. Eating a simple diet of seeds, fruit, and vegetables. If you really want to spoil your bird you can share some of your 'table food' such as pastas, yogurt, healthy cereals such as cheerios, and plenty of other foods. The top things to avoid are avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and anything high in sugar or salt. Try to keep their diet as natural as possible. Good seed mixtures can be found at a variety of stores. Avoid chain stores because they are very over priced.

Spend at least an hour and half a day with them and provide plenty of toys for them when you are not around.

We would love to help you find the next addition to your family so if you live in southern California please stop by the store! Does anyone have any stories to share about these kinds of birds?
